De Sena arrives at his $15 million threshold by comparing Spartan Race’s brand footprint to that of New York Road Runners, which sold its New York City Marathon title sponsorship and top-tier exclusivity to Tata Consultancy Services for more than $12 million annually in 2013. Terms of the 2012 deal are unknown, but annual participation in Spartan Race events has grown from 350,000 then to 1 million today. De Sena said they’re targeting other major shoe and apparel brands, tech companies and automakers. The obstacle race brand has hired ESP Properties to help sell the rights. In a statement, Reebok expressed confidence in its Spartan Race relationship but declined to comment on its future. “Reebok would like to continue with us, and we’d love to continue with them, but we are so much larger now than we were in late 2012 when we signed the deal,” De Sena said, “and with the additional pressure of Adidas, I just don’t think they can get to a place where we need to be.” But the rights have grown in value as Spartan Race expanded, and Adidas is restructuring Reebok and cutting costs. The Adidas-owned shoe brand signed a five-year deal in 2012 and has been “fantastic partners,” De Sena said. He thinks the rights are worth at least $15 million annually. Spartan Race does not expect Reebok to renew its global title sponsorship when it expires later this year and is searching for a replacement, founder and CEO Joe De Sena said. I will doing some more articles on the race and what to physically expect.Editor’s note: This story is revised from the print edition. So that is what we used for our race! Again, you don’t need it all, but this was the gear my team felt helped. They are also pretty cheap! Gearing up for a Spartan Race! A lot of people use those and really like them. A really popular brand is the Mad Grip gloves.

If you can throw a pair in your Camelbak, go for it! You might just really need them. I took mine off from time to time as well. They will get messy and hard to use if there is a lot of mud. A lot of our team did not use them at all. If you are running a race for time, forget the camera or use a GoPro.įor gloves, there are too many options to pick. You also just want to have someone that knows that they are capturing all they can. Being able to wear the camera would really help capture it all. A GoPro would definitely be a cool add on for future races. It gave us some good footage but was definitely a bit of work to get out of the pack whenever we wanted it. You will get beat up going over these walls and crawling on hard ground.įor a camera, we had 1 Kodak Playsport hand held camera. The big benefit to leggings or compression socks is protecting your legs.

On our colder race, I ended up getting some leggings and long sleeve performance under shirt to cut the wind. These will hold a lot less water! Keep your shorts shorter (like traditional running shorts – not bball shorts) to avoid any unnecessary hang ups). With anything though, look for nylons and polyesters. Ideally you want something for the climate you are running in. But in our group, we had a lot of race gear that really helped. Now there are always people that run these races in just gym shorts, a cotton tee, and grubby shoes. It was a really cool trip and I talked about it in the last weekend update if you want to know more.Īs you go into any of these OCRs, it’s good to know a little about some gear options that could help.
